Trouble hearing? Here’s how you can know if your hearing aids require repair.
You take care of your hearing aids. You’re extremely careful with your hearing aids. You charge them every night and clean them daily.
But you can’t understand why your hearing aids aren’t working effectively and it’s really frustrating. Thankfully, there are some things you can do to resolve the problem. Keep in mind: your number one job is to avoid damaging your hearing aid further (or you may need to get new ones).
Troubleshooting Your Hearing Aid
Make sure you consult with your owner’s manual when performing upkeep and troubleshooting because every model of hearing aid can be a bit different. On most models, these things can be checked:
- Wax buildup: Check for wax accumulation which could be impeding the normal operation of your hearing aids. Even if you perform routine cleaning, sometimes wax can accumulate quickly, so it’s worth ticking this off your list.
- Keep your microphone clear:On occasion, the microphone can be obstructed. Your hearing aid might sound silent or broken or have feedback if the microphone is obstructed.
- Examine your battery: Always double check your battery power even if you are certain your hearing aid sat on the charger all night. If your hearing aid has replaceable batteries, it might be a good idea to check if those batteries are inserted properly or if a new one fixes the issue.
- Look for noticeable damage: Check if there are any visible loose components or cracks around the shell of your hearing aid. Cracks, clearly, could reveal more significant damage (or allow).
Each of these problems will have a unique strategy so consult your owner’s manual. Self maintenance will be possible in some cases. (Your owner’s manual is the best place to start.)
Does my Hearing Aid require servicing – How Can I Tell?
Your hearing aid will probably require professional repair if you continue to have problems with it after doing these basic maintenance duties. That might not always seem appealing, after all, you rely on your hearing aid for daily communication (along with dinners with your family, keeping up to date with your favorite Netflix shows, and so on).
However, it’s worth pointing out that “repair” doesn’t always mean you need to “send your hearing aid out” for service and wait several weeks. There are some circumstances where it can be fixed in shop while you wait.
So in those situations, you will be able to get your hearing aid back in the same day (this is the reason why it’s a good idea to bring your hearing aid to us so we can assess the damage).
There are still some cases where such rapid repair is not feasible. A backup pair could be necessary in those situations. So if you have an old pair lying around, ask us whether they will work temporarily. We might even have a pair we can loan you while you wait.
Don’t Put Off Getting Help With Your Hearing Aids
It’s crucial to have your hearing aids repaired as soon as you experience any falter or fading of the audio quality.
That’s because you want to eliminate any downtime. Neglected hearing loss can influence your total health, and that includes your mental health. An even more serious concern is that your hearing will get worse as your hearing aids sit forgotten in a drawer.
The ideal way to keep your hearing healthy is to keep your hearing aids functioning. And the best way to do that is to clean them, charge them, and, when needed, take your hearing aids to get some professional assistance.
